Abstract

Health is generally thought of as the absence of disease or physical infirmity. However, a great number of scientific studies show that there is an interdependence and interconnectedness between the physical, mental, spiritual and social dimensions of the human being. Consequently, there needs to be an emphasis on giving treatment and care to the whole person. This article proposes that a biblical understanding of the Hebrew word shalom provides a basis for emphasizing the need for health care beyond physical wellbeing. It also highlights some practical ways that Christians can contribute to meeting global health needs from the perspective of biblical human wholeness.
