Abstract

This study was undertaken in an attempt to substantiate claims of increased cancer prevalence in an area that had experienced industrial practices which were known to be harmful. In a highly publicized case, some residents were awarded settlements from the company due to claims of industrial carelessness, which may have endangered the lives of the citizens of Hinkley, California. This study was taken up after the media and the courts had already judged the situation, to see if scientific evidence supported the claim that cancer cases had risen due to the environmentally unfriendly industrial practices of one company in the Hinkley area.
