Abstract

There has been much work in assessing and interpreting the writings of Ellen G. White within the Seventh-day Adventist Church. However, there are few studies that have tried to look at her writings using text-mining tools along with the implications for ESL readers. The purpose of this study is to analyze the Conflict of Ages Series by Ellen White using machine learning text-mining tools. The results indicate that the Conflict of Ages Series is written above the reading level of the typical American, moderately formal, and neutral in terms of their sentiment. A description of the most positive and negative sentences in the Conflict of Ages Series is also provided. For ESL readers, the Conflict of Ages Series may be beyond their comprehension due to the high readability and formality of the text devoid of context.
